Politico Mocks Harvey Victims

Only days after Hurricane Harvey ran its devastating course through Texas, Politico’s Matt Wuerker took a shot at hurricane Harvey victims by portraying The Lone Star State as stereotypical confederate, racist secessionists.

Though Politico has since deleted the tweet in light of its controversy the illustrator, Matt Wuerker defended his cartoon on Twitter:

“Respectfully--- it's making fun of the Secessionist movement. Not at all aimed at all Texans.”

It’s ironic that a comic depicting “stereotypical” Texans cannot be any farther from the truth. In the counties affected by Harvey citizens voted overwhelmingly for democratic candidate Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election, the candidate deemed by the left as the candidate of equality. Additionally in Houston white americans are not the most dominant race. Caucasians in fact hold only around 26% of the overall population, according to the 2010 census. Hispanics actually hold the seat for the largest population in Houston, sustaining around 44% of the total population.

As if this cartoon is not riddled with enough falsehood, the secessionist rescued by the United States Coast Guard is Matt Wuerkers way of depicting that the State of Texas can’t even deploy emergency services to their own citizens without aid of the Federal Government. In reality a lot of the inbound aid and logistics are coming from both the state and local governments of Texas.

Finally, it’s important to note that Politico has not deleted it from their website, which can be found here: http://www.politico.com/gallery/2017/08/01/matt-wuerker-cartoons-august-2017-002463?slide=0
